Rather than words, we drew pictures of animals we love.

But before we left, we took a long weekend to relax and recharge in Cape San Blas.

Cancer diagnosis is always a difficult event to grapple with. In the case of my father, his diagnosis was especially hard as it came unexpectedly and relatively suddenly. Before his health rapidly deteriorated, we made the decision to move back home so we could be closer to him and support him through his treatment.

It was during this time that we planned a trip to Cape San Blas. It was a place I had always wanted to go, and we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to spend some time together before we started packing. We camped  right on the water and spent our days paddle boarding, exploring the area, and catching butterflies.

Inspired by the Buddhist tradition of prayer flags, we decided to create our own version as a family project. We dyed the squares of fabric in the traditional order of color, and drew pictures of animals we loved. Blue, white, red, green, and yellow. It was a beautiful and healing experience, and something we will always remember fondly.[/vc_column_text][us_text text=”SAN BLAS Flags Supplies” tag=”h5″ css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.5rem%22%7D%7D”][vc_column_text css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-bottom%22%3A%221.5rem%22%7D%7D”](6 hr project)[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner columns_type=”” columns_reverse=”” ignore_columns_stacking=”” el_class=”col-mb-0″][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_iconbox icon=”fal|check-circle” size=”1.2rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”]Fabric[/us_iconbox][us_iconbox icon=”fal|check-circle” size=”1.2rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”]Tye-dye[/us_iconbox][us_iconbox icon=”fal|check-circle” size=”1.2rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”](OR purchase colored flags)[/us_iconbox][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_iconbox icon=”fal|check-circle” size=”1.2rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”]Stencils[/us_iconbox][us_iconbox icon=”fal|check-circle” size=”1.2rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”]Fabric markers[/us_iconbox][us_iconbox icon=”fal|check-circle” size=”1.2rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”]Twine[/us_iconbox][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][us_text text=”Step-By-Step Instructions” tag=”h5″ css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-top%22%3A%221.5rem%22%7D%7D”][us_iconbox icon=”far|chevron-right” size=”1rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”]Start with dying the flags.[/us_iconbox][us_iconbox icon=”far|chevron-right” size=”1rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”]Make sure you have somewhere to dry your freshly dyed flags.[/us_iconbox][us_iconbox icon=”far|chevron-right” size=”1rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”]Find a stencil your child can trace.[/us_iconbox][us_iconbox icon=”far|chevron-right” size=”1rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”]Use a fabric pen so the color won’t fade.[/us_iconbox][us_iconbox icon=”far|chevron-right” size=”1rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”]Cut two small holes in the top corners of the fabric.[/us_iconbox][us_iconbox icon=”far|chevron-right” size=”1rem” iconpos=”left” alignment=”none” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-left%22%3A%220%22%2C%22margin-bottom%22%3A%220.8rem%22%2C%22margin-right%22%3A%22auto%22%7D%7D”]Thread the flags onto a piece of twine and hang![/us_iconbox][us_separator size=”small”][us_grid post_type=”attachment” images=”165,167,168,171,173,176,174,166,178″ pagination=”infinite” items_layout=”gallery_with_titles_below” load_animation=”afb” columns=”3″ el_class=”img-gallery”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Get creative this summer with Camp DIY!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Looking for something fun and creative to do with your kids this summer? Why not try Camp DIY? With a little bit of imagination and some recycled materials, you can create all sorts of fun projects that the whole family will enjoy.

In this blog post, we’ll show you how to make a simple cardboard robot. All you need is some cardboard, a few basic supplies, and some creativity. So gather up your materials and let’s get started!

Building a robot with cardboard

Building a robot out of cardboard is a great way to recycle materials and have fun at the same time. Plus, it’s a perfect activity for a summer camp. Here are the materials you’ll need to get started:

– Cardboard box- Scissors- Tape- Markers or paint- Construction paper- Glue- String

Once you have all of your materials, you can start building your robot. Begin by cutting out a head, body, and arms from your cardboard box. You can make your robot as big or small as you like. Then, use your markers or paint to decorate your robot. Get creative!

Next, cut out some felt or construction paper to make eyes, a mouth, and any other features you want your robot to have. Glue these onto your robot’s head.

Finally, use string to attach the arms to the body. Now your robot is complete!

Cardboard robot materials
You will need the following materials to make your cardboard robot:

– 1 large piece of cardboard- 1 small piece of cardboard- 1 toilet paper roll- 1 paper towel roll- 2 plastic soda bottles- 4 bottle caps- 2 pipe cleaners- 1 piece of string- 1 piece of duct tape- 1 marker- 1 pair of scissors

Start by cutting your large piece of cardboard into two pieces. One piece will be the body of your robot and the other piece will be the robot’s head. Cut the small piece of cardboard into two pieces as well. These will be the robot’s arms.

To make the robot’s head, cut the top off of one of the plastic soda bottles. Cut the bottom off of the other plastic soda bottle. These will be the robot’s eyes. Glue the bottle tops to the small piece of cardboard. Glue the bottle bottoms to the large piece of cardboard.

Next, cut the toilet paper roll in half. These will be the robot’s legs. Glue the toilet paper rolls to the large piece of cardboard.

Cut the paper towel roll in half. These will be the robot’s arms. Glue the paper towel rolls to the small piece of cardboard.

Attach the small piece of cardboard to the large piece of cardboard. This will be the robot’s torso.

Finally, decorate your robot with the markers. Be sure to give your robot a name!

Making a cardboard robot instructions
Cut two circles out of cardboard. These will be the robot’s eyes.

Cut a curved rectangle out of cardboard. This will be the robot’s mouth.

Cut two long rectangles out of cardboard. These will be the robot’s arms.

Cut two smaller rectangles out of cardboard. These will be the robot’s hands.

Assemble the robot’s head by attaching the eyes and mouth to one of the circles.

Attach the arms to the other circle.

Attach the hands to the ends of the arms.

Your robot is now complete![/vc_column_text][us_post_title][us_grid post_type=”attachment” images=”16,14,15″ orderby=”post__in” items_quantity=”” items_layout=”gallery_with_titles_below” columns=”3″ items_gap=”1rem” overriding_link=”popup_post_image” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-top%22%3A%222rem%22%7D%7D” el_class=”img-gallery”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

How to Keep Kids Entertained While Glamping

[vc_row][vc_column][us_post_title][us_image image=”39″ css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-bottom%22%3A%221.5rem%22%7D%7D”][vc_column_text css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-bottom%22%3A%221.5rem%22%7D%7D”]If you’re looking for a way to keep your kids entertained while glamping, look no further than the Keowee bag. This simple sewing project is perfect for collecting rocks, sticks, and other treasures. And best of all, it’s something that your kids can enjoy trip after trip.

It’s fun to collect stuff in a Keowee bag

Lake Keowee was our first camping trip as a family with a pop-up trailer. I combined our kids’ interest in sewing with their need to collect things. I packed the felt and yarn I had on hand (with a few needles and glue). I asked the kids to think about what color and design they wanted their bag to have.

The kids were excited to get started on their bags, and they came up with some great designs. I helped them cut out the felt and sew the bags together. They were so proud of their finished products, and they loved being able to collect rocks, sticks, and other treasures on our hikes.

This was a great activity for keeping the kids entertained while we were camping. It was also a great way to get them involved in the trip and to help them create some lasting memories.

Glamping with kids

Glamping with kids is all about enjoying the great outdoors while also being able to relax and enjoy some creature comforts. A typical day glamping with kids might involve lounging in the water, playing games on the lawn, going on short hikes, and then making s’mores at sunset.

One of the best things about glamping with kids is that it can help them to unplug from technology and connect with nature. This can be a great opportunity for them to get some exercise and fresh air, and to explore their creativity. If you bring along some crafting supplies, you can even encourage them to make something special to take home with them.

Being crafty ourselves with nothing but time at the campsite, we love to design. Here’s what can happen with a little felt, yarn, and glue. With a little imagination, you can create just about anything. And what could be more handsome than a little man with a needle in his hand? Now each one has a custom-designed, hand-made satchel for collecting. Night Lights and Glowing Lanterns: A Fun Camping Craft for Kids

[vc_row el_class=”check-listing”][vc_column][us_post_title][us_image image=”24″ css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-bottom%22%3A%221.5rem%22%7D%7D”][vc_column_text css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22margin-bottom%22%3A%221.5rem%22%7D%7D”]Looking for an easy and fun camping craft for kids? Look no further than these night lights and glowing lanterns! Made with just a few simple materials, these lanterns will provide hours of fun and entertainment for your little ones. Lake Hartwell is one of our favorite lakes to camp on. We can sleep 10 feet from the water and paddle our canoe across to explore the island of rock formations and goose feathers. Nights at the campsite called for night lights. So we decided to make our own.

Lake Hartwell

Lake Hartwell is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. It’s located in the Appalachian Mountains and is a popular destination for camping, fishing, and hiking. The lake is huge, with over 930 miles of shoreline, and is one of the most popular camping spots in the US.

We love camping at Lake Hartwell because we can sleep right next to the water. We often paddle our canoe across to explore the island of rock formations and goose feathers. The nights can be very dark, so we decided to make our own night lights.

I’m always so amazed when these boys are excited to get crafty. These glamping kid lanterns solved the ongoing dispute over who got the giant lantern. We love the dark so we can see the stars, but when it’s too dark – somehow every noise could be that of a monster.

This kid-inspired design was started in the morning and finished in the afternoon after the glue dried. The boys really couldn’t wait to get their lanterns ready for nighttime. It took us the entire sunset to get the right picture that captured the happiness these lanterns brought the boys.

As the sun began to set, we placed our lanterns around the campsite. And they looked beautiful! The glowing light from the lanterns filled the campsite with a warm, welcoming light.
As we sat around the campfire, we talked and laughed.
